“My Tropical Chart Makes no Sense”

Do you know of any authoritative or core astrology texts providing evidence regarding your proposed system (Tropical Zodiac)?

Here, at https://vicdicara.com/tropical, I have given purāṇa and siddhānta as pramāṇa, but you are asking if I have any “core texts”? That is odd.

You may not have realized that jyotiṣa has three segments which are quite distinct.

  1. Gaṇika – Calculating a Chart
  2. Hora – Reading the Chart
  3. Naimittika – Reading other things

These three segments are each vast and distinct and are not covered in the same texts.

Core text for Naimittika Jyotiṣa include Bṛhat Saṁhita. Core texts for Hora include Bṛhat Jātaka, Sarāvali, Phaladīpika, BPHS, etc. Core texts for Gaṇika are the siddhāntas, of which Sūrya-siddhānta is central. The siddhānta themselves are based upon the Purāṇas, which are based on śruti (param-pramāṇa).

Sūrya-Siddhānta, the most “core text” on Gaṇika Jyotiṣa, treats the zodiac as an explicitly and entirely tropical entity (see http://vicdicara.com/tropical for details).

Hora texts seldom mention more than a word on Gaṇika subjects. However, I have shown at the link just given, that BPHS (a core Hora text) introduces the Zodiac by its astronomical similarity and differences from the stars and planets. Hence it complies with the siddhānta and does not treat the zodiac as a sidereal (star-based) entity.

If I use the Lahiri system and standard calculations, my ascendant is Gemini, and Jupiter in my birth chart is in Pisces which is the 10th house. That naturally gives rise to the Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga involving Jupiter – the Hamsa Yoga. I have to say that I have enjoyed the results of this yoga in my life so far. In your tropical chart, this yoga disappears.

The problem is that you are used to seeing one specific way of explaining an effect, and in the absence of that explanation, you think the effect unexplained. The effect is “I have enjoyed the results of Haṁsa Yoga.”

What are the effects of Haṁsa Yoga? Essentially they are the effects of a dominant, good Jupiter.

Now look at your tropical chart.

Your Moon is in Sagittarius, Jupiter’s sign, exactly trine to Jupiter.

– This will give effects nearly identical to Haṁsa Yoga

Furthermore your Jupiter is in Raja Yoga in your tenth house.

– This gives effects nearly identical to Haṁsa Yoga

Furthermore, my report evaluates Jupiter to be the most dominant planet in your chart.

– This gives effects similar to Haṁsa Yoga

Furthermore you have exalted Venus in the 9th house

– These effects are similar to many facets of Haṁsa Yoga

From a palmistry point of view, I am a Jupiterian archetype as represented by the mount and finger of Jupiter in my hands. My second most prominent finger and mount are of Apollo/ Sun.

Regarding Jupiter, see above. Regarding Sun, it is exalted in the 10th.

Have you found your system to be more accurate in predictions and explanations?

Wouldn’t I be a very strange person to continue to use it if I did not?

What I find is that prediction is a sloppy business for most people. They come up with intuitively informed guesses not based much on rigiously applied and universally uniform evaluation-sets. So, when someone says, “I predict more accurately with B” – I don’t feel particularly motivated to adopt B. I know that B “works” for them because (a) they got used to using B, and (b) their idea of “works” is at a lower standard than what I want to hold myself to.

I know of many psychics, palmists, and mystics, not to mention psychologists, doctors, meteorologists, social analysts, etc. who can predict things very impressively without ANY astrological system – sidereal OR tropical. So I am not really swayed by what is advertised as “working.” Many things work just because the people make them work.

Tropical astrology is what the śāstra pramāṇa teaches. Therefore I adopt it. It also works much better, but that is the secondary consideration for me.

I am totally confused. That means that also all Varga charts (i.e. D9) should be calculated from tropical point of view, shouldn’t they?
